I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter
Your Christmas media blow:
Avatar: The Last Airbender: It's like anime, but good.
A Very Long Engagement: Funny, moving, depressing and delightful. A precocious amateur detective spends seven years investigating why her fiancee was bound and tossed into a no-man's-land between French and German trenches in World War One, and what happened once he got there. In addition to being a gripping mystery, it's also an unrepentantly savage take on what was probably the most brutal, inhumane and stupid war of the Twentieth Century1. Made into a film starring Audrey Tautou as the protagonist, and really I couldn't envision anyone else in the role.
Superbad: A remarkably accurate depiction of the way horny eighteen-year-olds talk. Hilarious in some places - Michael Cera's cardboard-dry delivery of most of his lines carries the movie - awkward and weird in others. Come for the fake IDs, stay for the "definitely feels like there should be more pants there."
I Am Legend: Good scary fun. The story's paced in a way that will keep even hardcore fans of the material off guard. No one did anything uncharacteristically stupid, which is the one thing that shatters my suspension of disbelief in a sci-fi movie. Introspective close-ups on Will Smith's face alternated with slam-bang suspense and the occasional chase scene - good stuff. It didn't follow the novel exactly, but it borrowed some of the choicest bits where appropriate. Worth seeing but not an absolute must see.
1 With the possible exception of all the others.
