Linens 'n Things; I Begin Things

My summer reading will consist of Freakonomics and The World is Flat. I'll also be dipping back into George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, in order to be reacquainted with the story when A Feast of Crows drops on … well, whenever it's finally released.

I wanted the books ASAP, so I considered buying them in the real world rather than on Amazon. But I did some price comparison, and I still save about 20% off the list price by purchasing both books on Amazon and ordering 2-day shipping (instead of free "whenever" shipping). So I did. And Amazon just e-mailed to tell me they'd shipped them, so I'll probably have them tomorrow or Friday.

There's a store in Watertown Mall whose theme I just don't get. They've taken the space that CVS abandoned, and they sell … everything. Candles. Underwear (men's and women's). Toy guns. Plates and dinner sets. Luggage. Really cheap furniture. Rugs. Mattresses. I got a nice pair of sunglasses to replace a pair I lost (either at Christine's or at the S&S) for $4. The store doesn't even look fully unpacked. I think the owners are gypsies.

All I did last night was sweat. And yell. No entertaining anecdotes today; sorry.

We may have another entry for Worst Writing of 2005 once I'm done reading it.

And to think I chose this over Robert Pape's new book on suicide terrorism.

I know of what you speak. I think the theme is "It 'fell' out of the truck."

Yeah, but you rarely find that in the mall.

True, but the Watertown Mall isn't quite a mall. CambridgeSide Galleria. Chestnut Hill Mall. The Atrium. Those are malls. Watertown is perhaps a mini-mall; a step up from "swap meet" or "baazar."

Given the way cell phone vendors will accost you with ludicrous offers if you slow down too long before them, I see the analogy.

Ok, so Perich, do you not have an air conditioner in your room? If you don't, I happen to have an extra. Would you like to use it for the summer?

I have a giant fan.

... is this the "Legionnaire" air conditioner?

It might be. Honestly, I think its fine, considering I've been sleeping in a room with it for over a month with no ill effects. I have a new air conditioner in a box in my living room that I'd like to put in because, well, its new and its in a box in my living room. So the Legionnaire is free. If you want to come by and pick it up, its yours to use.

If it strikes my fancy next time I'm at your house (which may be tonight), I may take it off your hands.

Glad to hear it. I hate sleeping in heat, and I don't wish it on anyone. Particularly friends.

That having been said, the only sweating I did last night was at awesome, awesome jiu-jitsu. My room is usually a little warm at night, but never so bad that I can't sleep.

Just so you don't get the wrong impression

(btw, thanks for the free air-conditioner. w00t)

Wow, that jiu-jitsu does sound awesome... hmmmm... but yes, I assumed your sweating and yelling was because of the stifling night air. In any event, feel free to borrow the AC.

Barnes & Noble has free 2 day shipping for orders over $25, FYI.
